This isn’t a mystery: Benedict Cumberbatch was signed as an original villain. They decided to use Khan later, as an “Easter Egg” for fans, apparently after they saw Benedict working on set, and revised the story structure in spots to accommodate it. Far too late for anyone to back out without ripping their own face off financially and career-wise in the process.

Benedict is not the only cast member to mention not getting any scripts before or even after signing actual final contracts. John, Chris and Zoe have since said the exact same thing. They should all just keep their mouth shut. None of them are huge stars and it’ll blow up in their faces. You learn and move on.

My impression of people who after actors in these situations is that they also yell at store clerks for corporate decisions and wonder why nothing changes. Abrams, Paramount, Bad Robot, Orci and Kurtzman (as executive producers) are the roots of the actual problem.

Jesus, that article explains a lot. They really pulled the script out of their ass at the last minute, didn’t they. Whitewashing issue aside, it would’ve been a much better script if they had simply focused on the Harrison/terrorism story. Deciding whether or not he was Khan AFTER Cumberbatch was cast and then squeezing in Khan’s backstory is fucking stupid.

There is plenty to criticize about the film, but blaming an actor for not wanting to commit career suicide by backing out a film because they changed the script in this way? All kinds of ridiculous.
